This is one of five Thompson sub-machine guns that were loaned to the US Army on the afternoon of December 7, 1941, following the surprise attack by the Japanese on the US Naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. With an attack on the US mainland seemingly eminent, John S. Stembridge of Stembridge Gun Rentals loaned this Thompson to Fort McArthur to help in the defense of Southern California. It would be over a year before the guns were returned to Stembridge.
